From Boise to the Bolts? Scott Matlock Recruiting Ashton Jeanty to Chargers

The NFL offseason has always been a time of speculation, strategy, and roster-building, and for Los Angeles Chargers fullback and defensive lineman Scott Matlock, it is a reunion with a familiar face from his college days.

Yesterday, a post from the LAFB Network on X showed Matlock actively recruiting talk with his former Boise State teammate, running back Ashton Jeanty, to join the Bolts.

Scott Matlock Hopes To Reunite With Ashton Jeanty in Los Angeles

With the 2025 NFL Draft looming, this potential reunion could reshape the Chargers’ backfield and bring a dynamic playmaker to Los Angeles. But what would it take to make this happen, and why are Matlock and Jeanty a pairing worth watching?

Matlock, a versatile two-way player for the Chargers, isn’t shy about his desire to see Jeanty put on the powder blue. The duo played together at Boise State, where Matlock earned a reputation as a relentless defensive tackle and Jeanty became one of college football’s most passionate running backs.

Now, Matlock, who has secured his place with the Chargers as both fullback and defensive end, is now playing the recruiter game. The X post from LAFB Network take captive of the sentiment accurately.

A video clip in the thread shows Matlock casually chatting with teammates, saying, “Just do your thing, feel good” “I’ve been telling them. I’m like dude there’s this guy in our Boise. Like I know. Jim is like; I know. I know. So, we’ll see,” hinting at his recruitment pitch.

Matlock’s relationship with Jeanty is rooted in shared success. During their time at Boise State, Matlock was a defensive standout, earning All-Mountain West Honorable Mention recognition in 2020 and starting all 13 games in his redshirt senior year of 2022.

He led the Broncos’ defensive linemen with 49 tackles in the same season, adding six tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks.

Jeanty, was a rising star in the backfield, showcasing the kind of speed and IQ that have since cemented his position as a top prospect in the 2025 NFL Draft. Their connection from those Boise State days could translate to the NFL, more importantly as Chargers offense looking to add firepower.

Why the Chargers Need a Player Like Jeanty

The Chargers’ interest in Jeanty isn’t too complex to understand. Despite their promising 2024 season, their offense could use a dynamic running back to support QB Justin Herbert.

In a 2024 game against the Cleveland Browns, Matlock was mic’d up, celebrating big plays from teammates like Ladd McConkey and Quentin Johnston while also making an impact defensively with a sack on Saints quarterback Spencer Rattler. But the Chargers’ rushing attack has since lacked a true game-breaker, something Jeanty could bring.

Pairing him with Matlock, who already knows Jeanty’s tendencies from their Boise State days, could create an instant connection. Matlock’s blocking as a fullback could open lanes for Jeanty, while their shared understanding of the game could make the Chargers’ backfield a nightmare for opposing defenses.
