Michigan football scored a huge recruiting victory when five-star running back Savion Hiter announced his commitment to the Wolverines. The 5’11”, 205-pounder from Mineral, Virginia, selected Michigan over a final four that included Tennessee, Ohio State and Georgia.
Hiter’s commitment immediately shook the ground within college football recruiting circles. Hiter is the No. 1 running back in the 2026 class on Rivals, so this commitment is a major win for head coach Sherrone Moore’s program. The mere announcement of Hiter’s commitment elicited excited responses from fans of several fanbases.

“hopefully not another donovan edwards. big waste over there”, said a fan.
“Enjoy the win over Ohio State”, commented a fan.
“If he was a 3 star he would’ve committed to OU”, remarked a fan.
“CONGRATS YOUNG MAN YOU JUST WENT UNDEFEATED VS OHIO”, said another fan.
“Great decision young man! You didn’t wanna waste you talents in Knoxville”, congratulated a fan.
“Michigan found a gem again”, commented another fan.
“Had to doublecheck that last name”, wrote a fan referring to the player’s name.
“Bad decision young man”, advised a fan contrary to all the other opinions.
The Edwards comparison stung because it played off unresolved discussions regarding Michigan’s offensive thoughts and player development to wrap up the 2020s. Several observers expressed uncertainty whether Michigan had completely harnessed and maximized its incredible talent with respect to skill position players in the past few years; those discussions now accompany Hiter in his jump to the Wolverines.

Sherrone Moore Continues Building Michigan Program Despite NCAA Penalties and Suspensions
Moore’s commitment to landing Hiter demonstrates impressive recruiting momentum out of the gate despite all Michigan’s challenges. The Michigan head coach, Sherrone Moore, is currently the steward of the program while dealing with NCAA penalties stemming from a sign-stealing scandal that rocked the program.
The NCAA penalties are nothing short of catastrophic and severe. In total, sanctions added up to multimillion-dollar fines estimated at approximately $30 million-plus and four years of probation for Michigan football. Moore faces suspensions for games against Central Michigan and Nebraska in 2025 and an additional game in 2026.
Connor Stalions, a former Michigan staffer, was issued an eight-season show-cause for his role in the scandal, while Jim Harbaugh, who left for the NFL, received a ten-season show-cause penalty. Thankfully, the confusion of the NCAA did not result in a postseason ban, which would have severely punished student-athletes entering the institution.
The timing of Hiter’s commitment does have a little extra meaning. Moore was able to lead Michigan to an impressive 8-5 record in 2024, with victories over Alabama and Ohio State. The upset over Ohio State in Ohio Stadium was significant for a program of that calibre, and he would like to repeat his past performances come this season.
