Sam Leavitt’s Future Seemingly Clear After Massive Gesture at Team Dinner

Sam Leavitt’s time at Arizona State appears to be heading toward a definitive conclusion after a moment that spoke louder than any statement. Analyst Chris Karpman reported that Leavitt was the only team captain who didn’t attend the Sun Devils’ banquet, a night where each captain was recognized individually on stage.

When Leavitt’s turn came, head coach Kenny Dillingham didn’t pretend nothing was happening. He acknowledged him briefly and wished him well in whatever comes next, a line that all but confirmed what had been circulating for months behind the scenes.

This wasn’t a casual absence. It was a deliberate sign, the kind of move that programs, players, and insiders rarely misinterpret. For a quarterback who has already been connected to a possible portal jump and whose camp has reportedly been exploring his options ahead of the January window, this moment felt like the threshold being crossed.

“BREAKING: Sam Leavitt was the lone captain not at ASU’s banquet tonight, per several people in attendance,” Chris Karpman reported. “The other captains went on stage individually. When it came time to honor Leavitt, Dillingham told the audience that he ‘wished him well in whatever his future may hold.’”

Arizona State is preparing for the future, and Leavitt seems ready to chart a new path of his own. The gesture didn’t just add weight to the rumors, it completed the picture for many. A captain skipping the team’s biggest year-end event, combined with the head coach’s farewell-like tone, leaves little room for ambiguity.

Leavitt’s next step now feels like a matter of timing, not speculation.

    Sam Leavitt’s Arizona Stint Overview

Leavitt’s body of work at Arizona State tells the story of a quarterback who grew quickly into a high-impact player. After transferring from Michigan State, where he saw limited action in 2023, throwing for 139 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions, his game elevated sharply in Tempe.

His breakout 2024 season showcased his full range, with 2,885 passing yards, 24 touchdowns, and a strong 8.2 yards per attempt. He complemented that production with 443 rushing yards and five rushing TDs, turning ASU’s offense into a far more dynamic unit.

The 2025 campaign took a different shape because of injury, but even in a shortened season, he managed 1,628 passing yards, 10 touchdowns, and over 300 yards on the ground. Across two years at ASU, he totaled 34 passing touchdowns, 4,513 yards through the air, and 10 rushing touchdowns.

Despite the decline in productivity, his numbers are far beyond what he produced during his Michigan State stint and more reflective of the player he developed into once he took command of a full offense.
