On December 9, 2025, Sam Leavitt entered the transfer portal for the second time. He started with the Michigan State Spartans in 2023, then transferred to the Arizona State Sun Devils in 2024, where he became a starting quarterback.
After two seasons in Arizona, Leavitt is now looking for another program to develop his skills, potentially win a title, and be ready for the NFL. But his current injury is causing problems for the 21-year-old quarterback.
Leavitt recently visited the LSU Tigers and spent time with Lane Kiffin. Rumors suggest that LSU could be his next destination. During a recent appearance on Crain & Cone, On3’s Pete Nakos was asked about Leavitt’s current status.
When asked about the rumors regarding his injury potentially keeping him away from spring practice, next visit to Tennessee, and whether the foot injury is keeping him from finalizing a deal with the $1.23 billion worth program, Nakos said:
“Here’s what I can factually say is that every school that’s bringing him in on a visit is doing a medical evaluation to understand what his timeline looks like for recovery.”
Nakos outlined that Leavitt missed the second half of the season due to a foot injury. The injury happened in September during a game against the Baylor Bears. At the time, it wasn’t deemed to be a season-ending injury.
However, in October, Leavitt decided that he would undergo surgery to fix the problem, which meant that he would no longer be available for the rest of the season. Now the same problem is making it difficult for teams to invest in him. Nakos said that it’s “unclear” if he’ll be available for sprint football.
Kentucky is Still an Option for Sam Leavitt
For now, LSU is playing it safe while closely monitoring Leavitt’s recovery and return timeline. A visit and time spent with Lane Kiffin show that the Tigers are interested in him, but it doesn’t guarantee that they will bring him in.
On the other hand, Leavitt had a better time when he visited the Kentucky Wildcats. During his visit, the quarterback spent a lot of time with the Wildcats’ head coach, Will Stein. Several reports suggest that their conversations went well.
Leavitt was also seen watching film with Stein late until midnight. The Wildcats are interested in signing him. Leavitt has several great options on the table for him to choose from.
