Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt chose a different path in an era where college athletes often prioritize personal financial gain through NIL deals. The rising sophomore made headlines by donating $15,000 of his earnings to honor one of college football’s most revered figures.
Leavitt’s generous gesture towards the Pat Tillman Foundation demonstrates the character that extends far beyond the football field. His decision to give back while building his brand showcases maturity and leadership that resonates throughout the Arizona State community.

A Gesture That Resonates Beyond the Field
The donation gained significant attention after sports journalist Justin LaCertosa shared the news on social media, where Leavitt presented the oversized check. The post highlighted Leavitt’s statement about being “happy to be able to give back to a community that gave to him” and how the gesture makes him “feel like a better person.”

Leavitt announced at the end of a youth football camp on May 24, 2025. He hosted the camp with ASU wide receiver Jordyn Tyson to help young players in the community.
Pat Tillman was truly a legend at Arizona State and in American sports. He left his professional football career with the Arizona Cardinals to join the U.S. Army after 9/11. He lost his life while serving in Afghanistan in 2004.
Pat Tillman Foundation CEO Katherine Steele called the donation “an incredible gift.” She praised the young athlete for supporting the foundation’s mission and continuing Pat’s legacy.
The foundation has invested $37 million and supported over 900 Tillman Scholars, providing academic scholarships and leadership development opportunities for military service members, veterans, and their families. Leavitt’s contribution adds to this impressive track record of supporting those who serve.
Leavitt has shown generosity before at Arizona State. Last season, he donated his merchandise earnings to the Sun Angel Collective and helped teammates get NIL opportunities. This donation continues his pattern of putting others first.
Leavitt also has a personal connection to military service, as he mentioned having a cousin who serves as a Green Beret. This family connection might have influenced his decision to support the Pat Tillman Foundation, making the donation more meaningful and authentic.

The Michigan State transfer had an outstanding freshman season at ASU. He led the team to a Big 12 title and a College Football Playoff appearance. His on-field statistics were equally impressive: He threw 2,885 yards and 24 touchdowns while adding 442 rushing yards.
As Leavitt prepares for his sophomore season with Arizona State, opening against Northern Arizona on August 30, his leadership extends beyond quarterbacking duties. As his estimated NIL worth is $3 million, his donation of $15,000 is a meaningful way to honor Tillman and help military families nationwide.
