Sam Houston vs. New Mexico State: Key Players to Watch

Sam Houston has struggled to get anything going this season offensively. However, when the team has been at its best, so has quarterback Hunter Watson. While he does not get all the snaps, he has been the team’s most used QB thus far this season, completing 43 of 77 passing attempts for 396 yards. He is also the team’s leading rusher with 140 yards and two TDs on 39 carries. If the Bearkats are going to pick up a win, it will be because Watson has a big game.

Conversely, New Mexico State quarterback Logan Fife has had a strong season. He has completed 79 of 146 passing attempts for 1017 yards and five TDs. His biggest issues has been turnovers, throwing four interceptions thus far this season. If he can keep the turnovers under control, the New Mexico State offense can get rolling and the Aggies can pick up their first conference win of the year.

Sam Houston vs. New Mexico State Predictions

Fans should expect a close game here. Neither team has had a great start, but there is still time for them to salvage their seasons. Sam Houston has the advantage of being rested. Since they played in Week 0, they have had byes in two of the past three weeks. Their only game since Sept. 7 was a 55-0 loss to No. 9-ranked Texas. Conversely, New Mexico State is coming off a loss to in-state rival New Mexico last week.

Both teams are coming off losses, but one needs to win on Thursday. We think the betting underdog, New Mexico State, will come out on top. They have the more effective quarterback, and that is often the most important thing in these matchups between weaker teams.
