Texas Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian recently gave an update on one of his injured players. Coach Sarkisian and the rest of the Longhorns took on coach Clark Lea’s Vanderbilt Commodores for their Week 9 matchup of the 2025 NFL season on Saturday, Nov. 1, on the former’s home pitch, DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, Texas.
At the halfway point of the first quarter, Longhorns wide receiver Ryan Wingo suffered an injury during one screen sequence. He had a great start to the matchup after he opened with a 75-yard, catch-and-run touchdown on the first play. After going down with the injury, Wingo did not play in the rest of the game, but was still seen in his full uniform on the sidelines.
In the post-game press conference, as reported by @InsideTexas on X/Twitter, Sarkisian was asked for an update on his sophomore standout. Sarkisian revealed a thumb injury for Wingo. He then weighed in on the status of the other receivers in his team and discussed how the Longhorns were able to stay in the fight despite losing Wingo.
Steve Sarkisian: “Wingo hurt his thumb. We were down a couple other receivers in the first half. Michael Taaffe wasn’t able to go. We lost Jelani McDonald very early in the game so that put Derek Williams and Xavier Filsaime in there, then ultimately had Jonah Williams out there.…

Luckily for the Longhorns faithful, coach Sarkisian’s squad was able to hold on to a tight three-point lead to win 34-31 over the Commodores, who were unstoppable in the fourth quarter with a 21-0 run. This gave Texas its seventh win of the year for a 7-2 (4-1 SEC) record, while the Commodores fell to a similar 7-2 standing (3-2 SEC). Both teams now head into their respective Week 10 matchups.

Steve Sarkisian Says Ryan Wingo Could’ve Played If He Needed Him To
According to a report by Wescott Eberts of Yahoo! Sports, Steve Sarkisian said injured Ryan Wingo could’ve still played in the game against the Vanderbilt Commodores if he needed him to.
“In an emergency, he could have went back in today,” Sarkisian was quoted as saying.
This is likely why the St. Louis, Missouri, native was in full uniform on the sidelines for the rest of the game. There is no report yet on whether Wingo will miss any upcoming games.
