The resignation of Nick Saban had a profound impact on the Alabama football program. For years, Saban’s dominance defined the Crimson Tide, and his unexpected exit left a void that no coach could easily fill. Enter Kalen DeBoer, the man chosen to lead the program into its next chapter.
But his arrival wasn’t without hurdles. According to Ryan Williams, many in the locker room were unsure at first. There was a sense of doubt as players adjusted to a new era of Alabama football. After all, following a legend like Saban is no small task.
Ryan Williams Breaks Silence on Alabama’s Reaction to Nick Saban’s Retirement
Replacing a legend is never easy, and when Kalen DeBoer took over at Alabama, he stepped into the enormous shoes left by Nick Saban. The handover wasn’t seamless at first, and now, standout freshman receiver Ryan Williams has opened up about the early struggles.
In the “SEC Network documentary All In,” which followed the team during spring camp, Williams shared his part of the truth. “Definitely been uphill for the culture. When coach DeBoer first got here, it was kind of a culture shock,” he admitted. At first, it might seem surprising since Williams wasn’t even on the team when DeBoer arrived. But he explained, “Just listening to the other guys, some people weren’t bought into Coach DeBoer yet.”

This admission shows the hard truth DeBoer faced when stepping into a program built on Saban’s strong values. Even though DeBoer had just led Washington to a national title game, not everyone at Alabama was immediately sold on his leadership. Saban’s rule for years had accustomed the players to a specific mindset and routine. So, change, even with success, takes time to settle in.
Fast forward to today, and the tone feels different. DeBoer is heading into his second year. The roster has started to reflect his vision. And Williams, who reclassified to join the team early, now holds the WR1 spot. He sounds more optimistic than ever about his new coach and the direction of the program. “Now that we’re in year two, basically everyone that’s here bought into Coach DeBoer and the rest of the coaching staff and everything we do,” he said.

Now, this one was the real relief. The early doubts seem to be fading. The team is starting to believe in the new direction. The players who stayed or joined through recruiting and transfers believe in DeBoer’s vision. Slowly but surely, a new Alabama culture is taking shape.
