Ryan Staub Makes Feelings Very Clear On Shedeur Sanders’ Role As Mentor Amid Starting QB Battle With Kaidon Salter

Ryan Staub wasn’t expected to get the starting duties for Colorado in 2025. But with Kaidon Salter and Julian Lewis not living upto the expectations, Coach Prime didn’t wait long to test his third string quarterback in the final two quarters of their 31-7 win against Delaware.

Staub threw 7-of-10 for 157 yards and two touchdowns, showing the experience and poise Colorado was looking from their first two QBs. This has turned the Colorado depth upside down and Staub is now named as the starting quarterback for this week’s game against the Houston Cougars.

Ahead of the game, Staub sat down for an interview with Romi Bean where he talked about being blessed to sit behind Shedeur Sanders for two seasons, what he learned from him, and how that helped him be ready when his opportunity came.

“Everything,” Staub said. “What it takes to prepare at the highest level. Seeing how he managed things at practice, the way he handled the receivers, you know, if someone busted a route or, you know, he was just — he was on everything. And he was the most prepared person out there on the field, and it showed. So obviously I got to sit behind that, and I got to try to replicate that as much as I can.”

After throwing for 3,008 yards and 37 touchdowns at West Ranch High School in Stevenson Ranch, California, Staub committed to join the Colorado Buffaloes two years ago. But he came at a time when Deion Sanders took over the program and he brought his own son to play as the starting quarterback.

Deion Sanders was left quite impressed with what he saw from Ryan Staub in the Week 2 win against Delaware. While he might not have considered Staub to be the starting quarterback during the offseason training camp, Sanders believes Staub is ready to take the reins.

He was strong in his praise for the quarterback after his performance against Delaware.

“I saw what I’ve been seeing in practice the last few years,” Sanders told Fox. “This is who he is, who he’s always been. He’s a [man of] opportunity, that’s all he is.”

It remains to be seen if Staub makes his case more strong by helping Colorado register a win against Houston this weekend.
