The introduction of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) money has changed how college athletes view their time in sports. Many now focus not only on their game and schoolwork, but also on ways to earn money and build their brand. NIL deals have opened the door for financial stability and business opportunities, encouraging athletes to think more like entrepreneurs.

Ohio State’s Ryan Day Sends Clear Message on NIL
While this can be a positive change, some coaches are concerned. For example, Ohio State coach Ryan Day worries that money, especially for transfer athletes, can distract from team loyalty and long-term program growth.
With big offers, some players may prioritize short-term gains over building a lasting connection with their team.
As a result, the balance between money, commitment, and personal growth is shifting, creating a new and more complicated era in college sports.

Ryan Day says if they have to talk a player into coming to OSU it’s not the right fit.

Day clarified that Ohio State wants players who genuinely want to be Buckeyes, not those focused on chasing NIL deals. Day added that it’s likely not the right fit if the staff has to talk a player into coming to Ohio State. The program values commitment and culture over quick rewards.
This mindset seems to work, as zero scholarship players transferred out of the program this spring.
Day’s approach reflects a larger goal: building a strong, united team focused on long-term success. After a strong season, the Buckeyes are looking to run it back with a group of fully bought-in players.
