Analyst Ross Tucker Breaks Down How the Jaguars Should Use Travis Hunter in His Rookie Year

Travis Hunter made college football history in 2024 with a season showcasing his rare offensive and defensive talent. Playing for Colorado, the junior became the first two-way player to win the Heisman Trophy since Charles Woodson in 1997. He also won the Biletnikoff Award as the nation’s top receiver and the Bednarik Award for best defensive player.

Hunter played 1,443 snaps, nearly splitting time between both sides of the ball. On offense, he led the Big 12 with 92 catches for 1,152 yards and 14 touchdowns. On defense, though, he recorded four picks, 11 pass breakups, and a game-winning forced fumble, earning Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year honors. How could the Jaguars utilize Hunter’s insane talent in his rookie season?

Ross Tucker Shares How the Jaguars Plan to Use Travis Hunter’s Dual Skills

On The Dan Patrick Show, ex-NFL OL-turned-analyst Ross Tucker shared his thoughts on how the Jacksonville Jaguars should use Hunter after trading up to draft him.

“You can’t move up and give up that many assets unless he is going to play both ways and you feel like you have a good plan for him to play both ways,” Tucker said.

He called Hunter “the best college football player I’ve ever seen,” praising his ability to handle over 120 snaps per game at Colorado. Tucker believes Hunter’s impact could go beyond the field, saying, “He has the potential to be like the Steph Curry of football,” and inspire more top recruits to play on both sides of the ball.

As for the Jaguars’ plan, Tucker added, “I think he’s a full-time corner and… a part-time receiver who I think they feel like they’ll get a lot of value out of.”

He emphasized Hunter’s entertainment value. “I have to get a Shohei Ohtani out there… people want to see him as a receiver and a defensive back.”
