With high expectations, Iowa State is gearing up for a big 2025 season. However, head coach Matt Campbell is focused on keeping the team grounded, especially since some players still haven’t had a chance to make an impression.
Since the Cyclones are opening their season early with a game in Ireland, they’ll face one of the longest schedules in college football. Campbell is treating spring practices with the same intensity as fall camp to get ahead.
According to quarterback Rocco Becht, Campbell’s fiery presence behind the scenes shapes Iowa State’s mentality for the challenges ahead.

Rocco Becht Says Matt Campbell Is Locked In This Offseason
Iowa State is feeling the buzz after several of its players were drafted and others signed as undrafted free agents. But even as celebrations continue, the work hasn’t stopped. The Cyclones just wrapped up spring football and got an early glimpse of what the 2025 squad might look like.
Still, the roster isn’t set. Some new players will join later this offseason, and a few are still waiting for their chance to stand out.
In the middle of it, quarterback Rocco Becht recently chatted with ‘The Morning Rush,’ where he shared what it’s like to play under head coach Matt Campbell. When asked to compare the offseason Campbell to the in-season version, Becht didn’t hold back.
He said that Campbell treats spring ball like fall camp, pushing players to their limits and preparing them for what’s ahead. “He’s trying to make it like fall camp,” Becht explained. “We know that we start a week earlier because we play in Ireland, and we have one of the longest seasons in college football.”
This tough approach helps Iowa State’s young roster develop quickly. And the coach is working hard to keep everyone on track with the team’s evolving environment.

While Campbell may seem calm in media appearances, Becht revealed that his intensity shows in team meetings and workouts. “You don’t see that fiery guy in the meeting rooms or media,” Becht said. “But on the field, you’ll see him getting on a ref or whatever. That’s what you see in the facility during the offseason because he’s trying to get us to our ultimate best.”
Becht’s words show that Matt Campbell is driven by a strong desire for excellence. He pushes the team hard, whether during offseason workouts or on game days. This year, his hands-on coaching style is key as Iowa State works with a new team that needs strong leadership to reach its full potential.
