Purdue Snags Auburn Transfer Rico Walker in Smart Portal Move

Yesterday, the Boilermakers landed a key addition in Auburn tight end Rico Walker, which could reshape their offensive position for next season. With the program undergoing a transition under new head coach Barry Odom, Walker’s commitment marks the program’s 27th transfer portal addition this spring.

Walker is a sophomore with two years of eligibility left, bringing potential to West Lafayette. Though his stats are limited, his high school records and earlier flashes at Maryland suggest he’s a player with untapped upside.

Purdue Football Secures Versatile Tight End Rico Walker From Auburn As Key Portal Addition For 2024 Season

Walker hailed from Hickory, North Carolina. He was a three-star recruit in the 2024 cycle, ranked as the No. 419 overall player and No. 18 tight end by On3.

As a standout at Hickory High, he earned Under Armour All-American honors, showcasing his potential as a dynamic playmaker. At 6’2” and 246 pounds, he has the frame to be a mismatch in the passing game while holding his own as a blocker in the run game.

Walker started his college career at Maryland in 2023, where he appeared in eight games as a freshman. He recorded four catches for 27 yards, showing glimpses of his ability to contribute in the passing game. He transferred to Auburn ahead of the 2024 season in the quest for a bigger role.

However, his time with the Tigers didn’t go as planned. He featured in just five games and failed to record a single reception, often buried on a depth chart that includes established tight ends like Luke Deal and Rivaldo Fairweather.

Purdue didn’t see Walker’s lack of production at Auburn as a red flag; rather, as an opportunity. The Boilermakers have been aggressive in the transfer portal this offseason, adding 57 players overall, including three tight ends in the December/January window: Christian Earls and Christian Moore from UNLV, and Luca Puccinelli from Wake Forest.

However, the need for depth at the position became even more pressing after George Burhenn, the starter, suffered an injury during spring practice. As the lone tight end addition in April, Walker fills a critical gap.

Walker’s impact on Purdue will ultimately depend on how quickly he can adapt to a new system and earn a role in a crowded tight end room.
