Rich Rodriguez Shares His Feelings About West Virginia’s Current Roster, And He’s Not Happy

Rich Rodriguez, West Virginia’s head coach, is frustrated with the Mountaineers’ current roster. In a recent post from Voice of Morgantown, Rodriguez expressed concern about WVU’s lack of depth at some positions, raising concerns about the team’s readiness for the upcoming season.

Rich Rodriguez Sounds Off on West Virginia’s Roster Depth Concerns

In Rodriguez’s first year as WVU head coach in 2001, the Mountaineers went 3-8 after replacing WVU great Don Nehlen.

“We had lost some pretty good players from the team that played in that bowl game, I think it was in Memphis, and so that was a hard spring,” Rodriguez said. “It was a harder spring than this spring, from what I remember. It was a bad season. It wasn’t a good season.”

“I think I’m a little wiser, but there are different challenges, too, from what we can fix our roster, but you can’t lock down your roster,” he said.

With roster cuts looming this summer, Rodriguez is skeptical that walk-ons will continue to be an important element of college football development programs.

As he has stated numerous times this spring, WVU will target nearly every position in the transfer portal next month.

“We need to get some o-line and d-linemen,” he said. “We need to get some wideouts, a running back, probably need to get some linebackers, a corner, a safety, and a couple of d-linemen.”

WVU lacks depth in the receiving corps, making it difficult to create explosive plays offensively.

Despite confidence in starting RB Jahiem White, Rodriguez wants more reliable options in the backfield.

With the transfer portal reopening on April 16, Rodriguez is anticipated to make roster changes in response to these depth challenges.

Despite these issues, Rodriguez is focused on building an optimal team culture and adding depth before the season begins. He is still assured that strategic recruitment and transfer portal efforts will help WVU fix its weaknesses.
