Rich Eisen Breaks Down Steelers’ Decision to Skip QB Early in Draft Drama, Steelers’ Mike Tomlin Faces Huge Gamble

Among other comments, Eisen stated that Mike Tomlin is playing a dangerous game by not selecting a quarterback before the 6th round. He expressed disagreement with taking a quarterback earlier in the draft. He also mentioned that the Steelers decided they didn’t value Sanders, a quarterback, over the players they recruited for other positions.

Sanders is an American college football quarterback who was recruited by the Cleveland Browns. He is the son of Pro Hall of Fame Cornerback Deion Sanders. Sanders’s physicality, skills, and character as a player prevented him from getting drafted by many teams and led to stalling on the Pittsburgh Steelers’ part, with fans doubting his standing in the NFL Draft.

Regarding Sanders, Eisen believed he would have been a great, excellent player for the Steelers had he been drafted. However, the Steelers prioritized drafting players for other positions since the first round of the NFL Draft, while stalling and ignoring the quarterback position. Eisen also explained the danger in relying solely on Aaron Rodgers as the starting quarterback.

Rodgers and the Uncertainty in Pittsburgh

So far, the Steelers have not received a definitive answer from Rodgers. While they believe he will join the team, there are no signed documents or verbal confirmation, leaving the Steelers’ starting quarterback position uncertain. Regarding Rodgers, Eisen said:

“Words cannot describe how ready I am for Rodgers to pick a team or retire. We can’t keep doing this every day for months.”

While Eisen acknowledged that the Steelers are on shaky ground, he also pointed out that, given Rodgers’ record and experience, he would be an ideal fit for the team.

“Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers are a perfect match, each fulfilling the other’s current needs.”

Eisen Questions Mike Tomlin’s Coaching Strategy

In Eisen’s breakdown of the team and head coach’s recent decisions regarding the draft, he questioned Mike Tomlin’s coaching ability, especially given the team’s poor playoff performance and inability to advance.

The future of the Steelers’ offensive lineup depends partly on Rodgers’s choice to either retire or join the team. The team’s current solid quarterback is Will Howard, a freshman who cannot be given the team’s starting quarterback position with his relatively limited football experience.
