Former Texas Longhorns QB Quinn Ewers Addresses Surprising NFL Draft Fall

Quinn Ewers still had one year of eligibility left, and he was reportedly offered an insane amount of money to enter the transfer portal. Still, Ewers decided to hit the NFL draft instead. In a surprising turn of events, Ewers was the 13th quarterback to be selected, and he had to wait till the seventh round.

Ewers was selected by the Miami Dolphins with the No. 231 pick. He’ll play backup to former Alabama signal-caller Tua Tagovailoa. Ewers’ slide didn’t get much attention because of Shedeur Sanders.

“Didn’t Know What Was Going on”—Quinn Ewers Finally Speaks Out on NFL Draft Shock After Texas Exit

Ewers finally spoke for the first time about what he went through during the draft process. He knew he might fall out of the first round, but never expected to fall as far as the seventh round.

“I just didn’t know what was going on,” Ewers told ESPN two days after the draft, during a break from his workouts at MARR STRENGTH in Southlake, Texas. “But, I mean, it was nice, because at one point I’m like, ‘I’m not even going to get drafted. I’m going to go undrafted.”

“It was very unexpected, and I think that the toughest part about it is just the amount of unexpected occurrences there were. But I’m glad that I ended up where I ended up. To go as late as I did, I’m glad it’s a good spot.”

Ewers led the SEC with 31 touchdown passes in 2024 despite missing two games.

As the picks went by, Ewers didn’t look back on the offer he refused and thought maybe it would have been better to take it rather than go pro. He said he wanted to be remembered as a “Texas quarterback”.

“I wanted to continue on my career path, and I know I’m ready for the NFL,” Ewers said. “I think my game fits the NFL better than it does in college, honestly. I’m ready for the next step.”

After watching 13 quarterbacks leave the draft board, Ewers’ agent, Ron Slavin, finally got a text from Miami that they were picking him up.

“Maybe not as excited, but it’s the same opportunity that every guy that was drafted in front of me is getting,” Ewers said.

Slavin said he reached out to “half the league” to find out what happened the next day after the draft.

“They thought he was a third- or fourth-round pick, but too big of a name to be a clipboard holder,” Slavin said. “Which I think is chickens****”.
