QB Coach Darrell Colbert Jr. Breaks Down QB Prospect Shedeur Sanders Ahead of NFL Draft

After years of proven success in helping turn around collegiate programs, the former Colorado Buffaloes QB Shedeur Sanders plans to do the same at the NFL level.

However, partly because of his lineage, the 23-year-old has already faced added scrutiny throughout his career. Still, many analysts, like QB coach Darrell Colbert Jr., are high on the Colorado star.

QB Coach Darrell Colbert Jr. Breaks Down Colorado QB Prospect Shedeur Sanders

Sanders has established himself as one of the nation’s top QBs and is projected to be a top pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. Yet, as every sports lover knows, athletes are only as good as their mentors. For Sanders, one of those people is his coach, Darrell.

On a recent episode of The Rich Eisen Show, Darrell discussed his experience training Sanders and shared a standout trait distinguishing him from other athletes – confidence.

“For a QB, you want a guy that is sure in what he can do. He’s the guy that can fit into any system. His confidence in himself sets everything apart.”

Sanders is arguably the most polarizing QB prospect of the past two decades. During his four years as a starter at Jackson State and with the Buffaloes, he consistently picked apart defenses with his precision as a quick passer with outstanding ball placement and accuracy.

Although the QB may not possess elite arm strength or mobility, he overcame these limitations with extraordinary anticipation, timing, and a great touch on his throws into tight spaces. His swagger and unshakable confidence elevated his game and those around him, allowing his production to surpass his natural physical abilities as a player.

In the 2024 season, the QB completed an impressive 353 out of 477 pass attempts (74%) for 4,134 yards and 37 touchdowns. This performance earned him the prestigious Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, presented annually to the nation’s top senior QB.

Amazingly, the QB’s confidence isn’t confined to the field. This week, he brought up some controversy with NFL teams due to his confident visits. Fearless in the face of challenges, he has spoken often about his plan to revolutionize the franchise that drafts him in two weeks.

As draft day approaches, Sanders’ criticism will likely continue. But for teams willing to look past the noise of social media and shallow assessments, Sanders is a package of confidence, resilience, and strong leadership—the kind of quarterback that can deliver results from day one.
