Projected 2024 Texas State Bobcats Depth Chart

The projected 2024 Texas State depth chart boasts a stable of returning starters after the Bobcats' first winning season in almost a decade.

After an overall record of 23-73 between 2015 and 2022, the Texas State Bobcats broke an eight-season streak of losing records last year. Finishing 8-5, the Bobcats capped the year with a 45-21 victory over the Rice Owls in the First Responders Bowl, the program’s first bowl appearance and win.

Despite some attrition from players graduating or entering the transfer portal, the Texas State depth chart is loaded with returning players who proved their mettle last year and a few new names ready to do the same.

The Bobcats’ most significant loss and gain came at the same position: quarterback.

T.J. Finley started all 13 games for the Bobcats in 2023 but jettisoned to the WKU Hilltoppers after Arizona Wildcats QB Jayden de Laura transferred to Texas State in January. Controversy embroiled the addition of De Laura due to past allegations, leading to his withdrawal from Texas State.

G.J. Kinne isn’t one to shy away from portal prospects anywhere, let alone behind center, so the second-year Texas State head coach added two transfer QBs this spring, just as he did last spring with Finley and Malik Hornsby.

JMU Dukes quarterback Jordan McCloud, the 2023 Sun Belt Player of the Year, transferred in just in time for spring practice. Following spring practice, Kinne added Baylor quarterback R.J. Martinez.

Outside of QB, the Bobcats OL and defensive front seven were hit the most by graduation and the portal. Starting offensive linemen Brey Walker and Caleb Johnson exhausted their eligibility, while OG Marcus Alexander and C Danny Valenzuela entered the portal.

DEs Jordan Revels, Chance Main, and Sam Latham graduated, along with LB Brian Holloway, while the other starting linebacker, Dan Foster, transferred to Louisville.

The Bobcats made up ground in the portal in most of those spots, adding ULM standout Tellek Lockette and Butler CC offensive tackle Issiah Walker to the line.

Meanwhile, ULM LB Max Harris, UTEP LB James Neal, Houston LB Treylin Payne, and Incarnate Word DE Steven Parker bolster the defensive ranks heading into the 2024 college football campaign.
