Penn State Coaching Rumors: Top 3 Candidates Who Can Fill in James Franklin’s Shoes After Week 12

The Penn State Nittany Lions have gone from one of the best teams in college football to the bottom of the Big 10, and the season isn’t even over. To make matters worse, their former head coach, James Franklin, has already landed a new job. Franklin is officially the new head coach for Virginia Tech.

It seems like Penn State is running out of options. Between contract extensions and SEC coaching options, the Nittany Lions could be on the move to grab a new coach quickly. The only question is ‘Who will it be?’

Top 3 Candidates for Penn State

    1. Brian Hartline, Ohio State

This one could come as a surprise, but it isn’t too far-fetched. Hartline’s offense has clearly been dangerous the past two years, and the Buckeyes remain the best team in the country. He seems to have a great sense of recruiting, which will be important if Penn State wants to compete for the playoffs. There is speculation whether Hartline would leave for a conference rival.

For that, Penn State fans should be quick to point to Jim Knowles, who is their current defensive coordinator. Knowles left the Buckeyes for Penn State last year in what was a surprising move for most people in college football. If Knowles could do it, there is a chance the Nittany Lions could grab Hartline, too.

    2. Clark Lea, Vanderbilt

Clark Lea should definitely be getting more attention for all the open seats this year. He has somehow managed to turn Vandy from the SEC doormat to a top-25 team in the last two years. Clearly, he knows the portal, as he brought in Diego Pavia. More importantly, he knows how to turn programs around. Penn State hasn’t been able to win games. They are consistently stuck between great and good, and Lea could easily be the guy to change that.

    3. Matt Campbell, Iowa State

There is a reason Iowa State continues to trend in the top 25 year after year. Campbell has changed Iowa State since his arrival. Consistently ranking in the top 25 is not something older ISU fans can say. Penn State could give Campbell a chance to compete for a national championship. On the other hand, Campbell also brings plenty of experience to Happy Valley. He is proven, and that could be dangerous for a program that needs a spark.

    Bottom Line

Penn State should certainly be trying to secure its coach as soon as possible. It is only a matter of time before teams like Florida and LSU start to name their new head coaches. Competing with those SEC schools will be difficult for Penn State. If Happy Valley wants to see a national championship, grabbing a coach before the season is over seems to be the best option.
