Paul Finebaum Tracks Back On Ryan Day Criticism As Ohio State Trashes SEC Insider’s Heisman Pick Arch Manning

The Texas Longhorns are arguably one of the strongest teams this year. With Arch Manning stepping up to the starting quarterback position, many believed they’d be unbeatable this season. However, the season opener itself crushed all those dreams.

Paul Finebaum, known for his bold takes, had predicted the worst for the Ohio State Buckeyes before their game against the Longhorns. He was particularly critical of Ryan Day, the head coach of the Buckeyes.

In an episode of The Paul Finebaum Show, he had said:

“I think anyone who thinks Ryan Day is one of the two or three best coaches in the country is foolish. He is a good CEO. But I think that you have seen multiple instances, Georgia three years ago, Michigan the last four years, where he looks completely clueless on the football field.”

All it took was a 14-7 win for the Buckeyes for Finebaum to backtrack on his criticism of Coach Day. After Ohio’s dominant performance, Finebaum went on his show and heaped praise on the 46-year-old coach.

“The team that Ryan Day put out there the other day was not the same team that won the championship, but it looked pretty similar to me,” Finebaum said. “Ryan Day didn’t have a long way to go, but he’s advanced as an elite head coach, which I didn’t think he was.”

Now, his criticism of Day wasn’t completely unfair. The Buckeyes have not won the Big 10 title since 2020. They have not defeated the Michigan Wolverines since 2019, despite being one of their fiercest rivals.

These stats play a huge role in making or breaking the reputation of any coach. So, even though Finebaum was harsh in his assessment of Coach Day, he had his reasons to doubt whether he can deliver with the Buckeyes. After their recent win, he feels slightly more confident about the coach’s potential.

Tom Brady backed Arch Manning after the loss

Arch Manning comes from a family of football legends. However, for a young quarterback who has just tasted a rough loss, Tom Brady’s words can help him bounce back from it. During a conversation with Cris Collinsworth, Brady talked about how Manning should handle this situation.

Brady admitted that the loss must’ve crushed him, especially because he’s carrying the weight of his family name. However, Manning can look at it positively and use this opportunity to be more resilient, as it’s necessary for a star quarterback.

“Even though he didn’t have his best game today and they lost, if he uses this to his advantage, Arch, he’s going to be tougher for it and he’s going to have a better next game because of it,” Brady said. (39:26)

Brady understands what it’s like to be the biggest name on the field and how heavy it gets when they fail. So, his advice for the young QB is to pick out his lessons from the loss, get back to practice, and get it right the next game.
