‘He’ll Play in Enough Marquee Games’ — Paul Finebaum Makes Eye-Catching Predictions for Florida’s DJ Lagway

DJ Lagway will be the starting quarterback for Billy Napier in 2025. Paul Finebaum makes a huge prediction for the Florida Gators QB.

Billy Napier and the Florida Gators will have a new quarterback in the pocket when they take the field in 2025. DJ Lagway, who will play in his sophomore season, will be unanimously nominated as a starter for the team after Graham Mertz left for the upcoming NFL Draft.

As the offseason preparation goes in full swing, Paul Finebaum made a huge prediction for Lagway. He believes the youngster could be in line to win the coveted Heisman if he showcases a dominating performance for the program.

Paul Finebaum Claims DJ Lagway Could Win the Heisman

The Heisman Trophy is often viewed as a quarterback’s award since the ratio of QBs winning the trophy to non-QBs finishing the podium has a great disparity. Statistically, only five non-QBs have won the Heisman since 2000, with the latest one being Travis Hunter, who outclassed almost everyone in the class.

Finebaum, who is known to throw preseason predictions, made an opinion about the Florida QB. He believes Lagway has the potential to become the next big thing in college football.

“To win the Heisman, you obviously need a great year,” Finebaum said per Athlon Sports. “But, your team needs to be in contention. You don’t have to win … If Florida is really good and rolling along in November, in position to maybe get to the playoff, then I think he could have a chance. He’ll play in enough marquee games,” he added.

Lagway had already started a few games for Florida in 2024 after Mertz struggled with an injury. In his first start, he recorded 456 passing yards and scored three touchdowns. This helped him break a long-standing freshman record by Chris Leak.

Lagway wrapped up the 2024 season with a decent record. He completed 59.9% of his passes for 1,915 passing yards and scored 12 touchdowns while conceding nine interceptions.

Florida will have a deep quarterback class in 2025. If not Lagway, Napier can explore an alternative option with four-star QB recruit Tramell Jones Jr. in the room. They will be looking for opportunities in Lagway’s absence and potentially a starting role if he puts on an underwhelming performance.
