Former Texas Tech Red Raiders star and current Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has endorsed a current standout from his alma mater for a prestigious honor. On Saturday, Nov. 8, Mahomes reposted a post by @TexasTechFB on X/Twitter, showing the stat line of current linebacker for coach Joey McGuire’s 2025-26 Red Raiders, Jacob Rodriguez, from his most recent outing.
The post calls for Rodriguez to be seriously considered for the 2025 Heisman Trophy, which is the highest individual honor a college football player can receive in a campaign. In Mahomes’ repost, he asserts his endorsement of Rodriguez to win the esteemed award, as he believes that the fifth-year sensation deserves it. He used a five-word reaction for his caption, writing:
“Get him to New York! @HeismanTrophy.”

Much to the delight of Mahomes and the rest of the Texas Tech faithful, the upload encapsulates Rodriguez‘s stellar performance in his team’s most recent matchup in Week 10 of the 2025 season against coach Kalani Sitake’s BYU Cougars on their home pitch, the Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock, Texas, on the same day Mahomes posted. The Red Raiders, led by the likes of Rodriguez, were able to win by 22 points, 29-7.
Rodriguez then tallied a game-high 14 tackles, to go along with one tackle for loss, one interception and one fumble recovery as he was a pest all game long on defense against the Cougars. This gives the Red Raiders a 9-1 overall record (6-1 Big 12) on the year so far as the regular season is nearing its conclusion. Rodriguez and Co.’s next game in Week 11 is against the UCF Knights as Rodriguez looks to pad on his vie for the Heisman Trophy.
For Mahomes, he is currently in his ninth season in the NFL with coach Andy Reid’s Chiefs in the 2025 campaign. The three-time Super Bowl Champion and Super Bowl MVP has spent his whole career at Kansas, and has led the team to a current record of 5-4, placing them as third in AFC West. Currently in their bye week in Week 10, their Week 11 opponent is slated to be the Denver Broncos on Sunday, Nov. 16.

No Linebacker Has Ever Won The Heisman Trophy
Should Jacob Rodriguez pull out all of the stops and win the 2025 Heisman Trophy, then he will become the only ever linebacker in collegiate football history to have ever clinched the award.
This is because the closest from the position that has ever come close to winning it was Notre Dame Fighting Irish’s Manti Te’o back in 2012, when he placed second. On the contrary, Patrick Mahomes never won the nod.
