Pat McAfee Reacts as Jon Sumrall Possibly to Blame for DJ Lagway Decision

Quarterback DJ Lagway pledging to enter the transfer portal was one of the biggest news stories on Monday. A five-star recruit, Lagway committed to the Florida Gators in 2024 and soon became the starting quarterback after Graham Mertz was placed in concussion protocol.

Lagway took full advantage of the opportunity and threw for 456 yards and had three touchdowns in his first start. That paved the way for more opportunities and a great season for the 20-year-old.

His performance in the 2024 season was one of the reasons why Billy Napier was able to hold onto his job for another season. However, the 2025 season hasn’t gone so well for Lagway, Gators, and Napier.

Now that he’s entering the portal, many wondered what could have led to this situation in a program that already has a lot of struggles to deal with. Insiders claimed that Jon Sumrall, the new head coach of the program, had conversations with Lagway, but nothing worked out. Interestingly, Lagway wanted to stay in Florida.

Pat McAfee discussed the same on his show and shed light on the fallout. Citing Chris Hummer’s report, McAfee said that initial meetings with Sumrall didn’t go as planned, but it’s still just one side of the story.

McAfee said that it’s best to wait for Sumrall to issue a statement on the same. Until then, it’s safe to assume that in the meetings, he’d have asked Lagway questions about the season’s failure and why he couldn’t help the team secure a good position.

It’s also possible that Lagway is looking for a fresh start because the Gators that he joined aren’t the same anymore. With head coaching changes and the team falling off on the charts, they’re now struggling to find a new identity.

Chris Hummer Shared a Detailed Report on DJ Lagway

In his recent report, Hummer cited several sources who told him what unfolded in the Florida program that led to Lagway pledging to enter the portal. It’s confirmed so far that the quarterback wanted to stay in Florida and had expressed the same.

However, Sumrall had asked some tough questions to Lagway about his performance in the season and his role in the program, which might’ve derailed their conversation.

“Lagway’s initial meeting with the new Florida staff did not go well, per multiple sources. New Florida head coach Jon Sumrall questioned who Lagway is as a football player. The new staff opted to challenge the high-priced quarterback, pushing him on his competitiveness and work ethic,” Hummer wrote in his report.

Lagway has always been described as a hard worker who is curious to learn more and is always seen running around the campus to make himself better. So the questions about his commitment don’t align with the image people have of him.

We might have to wait for Sumrall to tell his side of the story to piece it all together.
