Oregon vs. Oregon State Prediction: Dillon Gabriel, Ducks to Prevail, But Can They Cover?

For the first time, the Ducks and Beavers face off in a September matchup. Discover the best bets in our Oregon vs. Oregon State prediction.

The rivalry between the Oregon Ducks and Oregon State Beavers is one of the most storied in FBS history. Saturday’s matchup may lack the conference stakes of previous years, but the intensity will be just as high as in the past 127 meetings.

Usually reserved for the end of the season, this year’s game in the Pacific Northwest takes place before November for only the second time—the last being on October 23, 1937. It’s also the first time both teams come into this rivalry undefeated since 1907.

Ahead of this clash, College Football Network provides the latest college football betting odds and a detailed Oregon vs. Oregon State prediction.

The No. 9 Oregon Ducks are off to a 2-0 start this season but haven’t quite lived up to their dominant preseason expectations. They opened the season with a narrow 10-point win over FCS opponent Idaho, despite being 49-point favorites. The game remained a one-score contest for much of the fourth quarter.

Oregon heads into this rivalry game after a dramatic victory over Boise State, winning on a last-second field goal to avoid an upset as 17.5-point favorites.

If dominance in the Beaver State is what you’re after, Oregon State has delivered. The Beavers opened with a 23-point win over Idaho State, outscoring the Bengals 31-6 after the second quarter.

They followed up with a defensive masterpiece against San Diego State, holding the Aztecs scoreless and limiting them to just 2-of-12 on third-down conversions, marking their first road shutout since a 0-0 tie with Oregon in 1983.

Early betting trends show 55% of spread bets favoring the home team, Oregon State. However, the Beavers are 4-7 against the spread in their last 11 games against AP-ranked opponents, while the Ducks were 4-0 ATS last season as road favorites.

Prediction for Oregon vs. Oregon State

In his first season with the Ducks, Dillon Gabriel has seamlessly taken over the Oregon offense, showing impressive accuracy. He remains the only FBS quarterback with at least 70 pass attempts to complete over 80% of them this season.

Gabriel has thrown just 11 incompletions in two games, with two passing touchdowns in each outing. However, he faces his toughest test yet against the Beavers, who have allowed only 15 points through their first two games, the fewest at this point since 2002.

Oregon State relies heavily on its ground game, featuring running backs Jam Griffin (124.5 YPG) and Anthony Hankerson (113 YPG). They are one of just two FBS duos averaging over 100 rushing yards per game this season.

This matchup could expose a potential weakness in Oregon’s defense, which just allowed Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty to rack up 192 rushing yards last week. If the Beavers can establish their run game early, they might have the advantage in this contest.

Despite the recent wave of conference realignment, college football’s foundation is built on long-standing, often geographical rivalries. Fortunately, the traditional Oregon vs. Oregon State matchup has endured, even with the Ducks’ move to the Big Ten.

These teams have split their last four meetings, each defending their home turf. While the Ducks haven’t secured a win in Corvallis since 2018, they come into this game as heavy favorites. This game precedes their open date and a trip to UCLA for what has now become a Big Ten rivalry.

For Oregon State, this matchup has likely been circled on the calendar by every player and head coach Trent Bray in his first season. Rivalry games define legacies, and this one offers that chance, even if the landscape has changed.

While an outright upset might be tough to predict given the talent gap, this game could be much closer than the odds suggest.
