Oklahoma’s redshirt junior quarterback, John Mateer is fired up ahead of the Sooners’ key matchups with Michigan and Texas. The Little Elm, Texas native transferred from Washington State and quickly became the heart of Oklahoma’s offense heading into the 2025 season.
Mateer expressed anticipation for the Michigan atmosphere and rivalry showdown with Texas. His growing connection with teammates was on display when he joined senior defensive back Kendel Dolby for a 30-minute YouTube interview. The pair discussed Mateer’s transition to Norman and what lies ahead for the Sooners this fall.

John Mateer Looks Ahead to Michigan and Texas Games With Unshakable Excitement
Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer is embracing the challenges of the 2025 season with passion and purpose, especially as the Sooners prepare for marquee matchups against Michigan and Texas. The redshirt junior, a Little Elm, Texas native and Washington State transfer, is eager to play under the bright lights of college football’s biggest stages.
“I think seeing the crowd at Michigan is going to be really cool,” Mateer told On3. “Playing against a big-time team in this stadium. And then the Texas game. Everybody’s excited for that game. I’ve been one time. Grew up in Dallas and been there one time. There’s just so many damn people… I’m so excited.”
Mateer also touched on the personal growth that comes with stepping into the spotlight in Norman and navigating life in the SEC.
“It’s a new mountain to climb, building relationships and playing in the SEC,” he said. “Pressure is a term that’s whatever you make it… It’s an opportunity. I get a stage to show people who I am… Pressure can eat you up. I don’t let it get to me.”
He acknowledged comparisons to Oklahoma greats.
“There are comparisons to Baker (Mayfield) and the Heisman and all that, which is cool. But winning games is the ultimate goal.”
Reflecting on his recruiting journey, Mateer didn’t shy away from frustration.
“It pissed me off, it really did,” he said. “I was a two-star recruit and then I signed with Washington State, it brought me to a three-star. So right when that happened, I knew it was all BS. Stars don’t mean anything. For anyone watching this, stars don’t mean anything. They’re cute, but they don’t mean anything.”

Mateer credited former teammate and No. 1 NFL Draft pick Cam Ward for showing him the ropes.
“I just got to watch him — watch him practice and watch him work out. I watched him do his thing… I got to appreciate Cam and his greatness.”
