Ohio State’s Transfer Portal Loss Becomes Cal’s Gain as QB Devin Brown Makes His Decision Final

After three years at Ohio State, Devin Brown has signed with California in hopes of becoming a starting quarterback.

After watching his team, the Ohio State Buckeyes, take the field on Jan. 20 and win the national championship, backup quarterback Devin Brown will officially leave the program after three years in Columbus. According to 247Sports’ Chris Hummer, the quarterback signed with the ACC’s California Golden Bears one day later.

Devin Brown Signs With Cal, Transferring Out of Ohio State

Brown played 17 games for Ohio State and completed 56.3% of his attempts for 331 passing yards, three touchdowns, and an interception. He mainly played behind front-line players like C.J. Stroud, Will Howard, and Kyle McCord.

Since he never became the starting quarterback in the Buckeyes’ star-packed roster, Brown decided to transfer to another school on Dec. 8, with two years of eligibility left.

Before Ohio State’s game against Oregon on New Year’s Day, Brown had already announced that he would enter the transfer portal after the season concluded. However, at the time, all his energy was focused on seeing the Buckeyes fulfill their College Football Playoff run.

On Dec. 25, Brown tweeted, “Contrary to any reports, I haven’t committed to a school yet. I haven’t even visited a school. My focus is 100% on helping the Buckeyes win a national championship. Go Bucks!”

Brown’s last production came in the Buckeyes’ win over the Tennessee Volunteers in the first round of the College Football Playoff, with Ohio State winning 42-17. He completed one pass for six yards in the contest.

During the 2024 campaign, Brown accumulated 114 yards on 11 of 20 passing, with one touchdown. He also had seven carries for 13 rushing yards.

He will join a California team that went 6-7 in 2024 with a bowl game appearance in the LA Bowl against UNLV, where the Golden Bears lost 24-13. Brown is a major addition to the team, as he’s considered a top-50 quarterback in the transfer portal by both On3 and 247Sports.

However, Brown is the second signal-caller Cal has added from the transfer portal after Fernando Mendoza left for Indiana. The other addition is Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele from Oregon, who is ranked by On3 as the No. 4 quarterback and the No. 20 overall transfer.
