The Ohio State Buckeyes made history as the first No. 8 seed to win a national title, defeating the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 34-23 in the College Football Playoff National Championship. This victory gave the Buckeyes their ninth national title and their first since 2014.
As fans celebrated, recruits and former players took to social media to praise head coach Ryan Day and the team’s incredible achievement.
Recruits and Alumni Shower Ryan Day and Buckeyes with Praise
Ohio State’s victory wasn’t just celebrated by fans — it resonated deeply with current and former recruits. Chris Henry Jr., the top-rated recruit for the class of 2026, expressed his admiration for Ryan Day, calling him “the best coach in the nation” on social media.
Henry, currently a standout wide receiver at Mater Dei, affirmed his commitment to the Buckeyes, showing how the team’s championship momentum is influencing future stars.
Former Buckeye and current NFL running back J.K. Dobbins also chimed in, tweeting, “Coach Ryan Day… You deserve this moment!!” His words show how Day has garnered the respect of all the generations of stars that donned the Buckeyes jersey.
Michael Thomas, another Ohio State alum and NFL star, added a playful jab on social media, posting, “Price just went up in Columbus, OH.” The quip alluded to Ohio State’s controversial $20 million roster expenditure.
However, Thomas also shared multiple comments on social media expressing his pride and exaltation for his alma mater’s national championship win.
Day Is Ready To Meet Fans’ High Expectations
This championship win was a defining moment for Day. Just months ago, his job was in question after a fourth straight loss to the Michigan Wolverines. Now, he joins Ohio State coaching legends like Urban Meyer and Woody Hayes by bringing a title to Columbus.
At the postgame press conference, Day emphasized his pride in his players, saying they will be remembered as champions in Ohio State history. Quarterback Will Howard and linebacker Cody Simon sat beside him, both proudly wearing “National Champs” hats.
Day dismissed the idea when asked if the championship would ease the pressure moving forward and pointed out how demanding the Ohio State fanbase can be. He made it clear that losing even one game at Ohio State would immediately bring scrutiny.
By securing the program’s first national title since 2014, Day not only redeemed himself but also proved that he could lead Ohio State to the biggest stage.
