Ohio State vs. Michigan History: A Complete Look at College Football’s Greatest Rivalry

An age-old college football rivalry will have another historic game added to its record when the Ohio State Buckeyes lock horns against the Michigan Wolverines at Michigan Stadium for “The Game”.

The Buckeyes are currently unbeaten with an overall record of 11-0 so far this season as they sit pretty in the second spot in the Big 10. Meanwhile, the home side has also had an impressive campaign so far this season, with the Wolverines boasting a 9-2 record while occupying the third spot in the Big 10.

While a lot of fans might think of this encounter as just another iconic matchup, their rivalry goes beyond football, with the two states nearly going to war over a strip of land that included Toledo back in 1835.

When the Buckeyes and Wolverines met for the first time on October 16, 1897, Michigan won that game comprehensively, winning over Ohio State 34-0.

The Wolverines finished 6-1-1 that season, while the Buckeyes managed to get a dismal 1-7-1 record as they failed to score in seven of their nine games.

The early years of the rivalry saw the Michigan Wolverines dominate the Buckeyes by winning 19 of the first 24 meetings.

Michigan Enters The Contest With A Four-Game Winning Streak Over The Buckeyes

In recent years, Ohio State, in the 10 games played throughout the 2010s, have won nine of their fixtures, while Michigan State comes into this encounter with 4 wins on the trot, winning each and every one of their games from 2021 through 2024.

Historically, after Michigan State’s dominance over Ohio initially, the arrival of Francis Schmidt as the Buckeyes’ head coach back in 1934 saw Ohio State win four straight games against the Wolverines by a combined 114-0.

Schmidt’s influence on the Ohio program is so great that even today, Ohio State players still receive gold pants charms for beating Michigan, a tradition born from Schmidt’s time.

Paul Brown continued to help build the program in the 1940s, leading the Buckeyes to their first national championship in 1942 after beating Michigan 21-7.

One of the most iconic Ohio State vs. Michigan games was played on November 18, 2006, in an extremely close 42-39 game, which saw the Buckeyes win the game so much so that the game was touted to be the “Game of the Century.”
