Ohio State’s QB Battle: Julian Sayin, Tavien St. Clair, and Lincoln Kienholz Compete for Starting Spot

Head coach Ryan Day has stated that there is a “long way to go” in picking the starter, emphasizing the value of toughness and leadership throughout spring practices.

Sayin, a former five-star recruit, switched from Alabama to Ohio State after Nick Saban’s retirement. He played in four games for the Buckeyes as a freshman, completing 5 of 12 passes for 84 yards and one score.

His decision to stay at Ohio State signals he is the front-runner for the starting position.

St. Clair, a five-star recruit and the third-ranked QB in the 2025 class, brings a strong resume to Columbus. St. Clair, an Elite 11 finalist, and Navy All-American Bowl invitee, threw for over 10,000 yards and 100 touchdowns in high school.

While he is expected to compete for the starting position, his standing as a true freshman could make him a backup initially.

Kienholz, now in his third year with the program, has both experience and agility. Kienholz, a South Dakota native, has been with the Buckeyes the longest of the three and could use his knowledge of the system in the quarterback contest.

“Julian Sayin enters spring practice as the perceived frontrunner for Ohio State’s quarterback job, but Lincoln Kienholz and Tavien St. Clair will have their say,” an X post from Eleven Warriors states.

The Ohio State quarterback competition is expected to be a focal point this offseason. With Sayin’s expertise, St. Clair’s high school accomplishments, and Kienholz’s experience with the team, the Buckeyes’ are ready to make an important decision that will shape their offensive future.
