North Carolina Freshman Evan Haynes Hits the Transfer Portal Before Playing a Game

While someone’s dream can be to one day play in the NFL, others are content with being signed to a college team. Evan Haynes from the University of North Carolina got signed to play for the 2025-26 season and was expected to play under Bill Belichick.

However, things have taken a turn, and Haynes has become one of the latest recruits for the Tar Heels to enter the transfer portal. Haynes signed with the Tar Heels less than a year ago and has already decided he wants to play elsewhere.

Tar Heels Lose Another Recruit to Transfer Portal

Haynes was part of the recruiting class under former coach Mack Brown, before being replaced by Belichick. Haynes joins Beau Atkinson, Ryan Browne, Christian Hamilton, and DeAndre Boykins, who have recently transferred from the Tar Heels.

Haynes chose the Tar Heels over other top schools, such as Colorado and Georgia Tech, while also being offered scholarships from Georgia, Miami, and UAB. It remains to be seen which school he will ultimately choose, but Haynes remains appreciative of the opportunity the Tar Heels gave him.

“They always had a little lead for me. After offering me last June, we had those relationships, and I always liked them a lot. I took my official visits, and it just clicked,” said Haynes. “I knew it was North Carolina for sure after the official visits, but going into those, they had the lead in my mind.”

Haynes played high school football at Fellowship Christian in Milton, Georgia. In his high school career, Haynes was a first-team All-State and All-Region selection and caught 85 passes for 1,390 yards and 15 touchdowns over his four years.

Haynes also played safety and racked up 93 tackles, two tackles for loss, four interceptions, and two forced fumbles. The all-state athlete also competed in track and field, qualifying for the state meet three times and serving as a member of the state relay runner-up 4×800 team.

The numbers may not have lit up the scoreboard like some of the top five-star recruits, but there’s no doubt of Haynes’ athletic abilities. The three-star prospect’s ability to play both sides of the field shows his endurance and athleticism, even if it isn’t at the level of one of the top NFL prospects, Travis Hunter.
