Last season for North Carolina Tar Heels fans was perhaps the most dismal one of them all. The Tar Heels ended their season with a 6–7 overall record and a conference mark of just 3–5. They closed things out with three straight losses, and the finale was the worst of them all.
It was sloppy, it was frustrating, and it was the final straw for Mack Brown. Brown’s last season ended with only question marks. However, things have shifted in a big way.
Bill Belichick was appointed head coach of the Tar Heels last December. After being passed over by the NFL this offseason, the six-time Super Bowl champion is bringing his legacy to the collegiate sidelines. Belichick might not have any collegiate coaching experience, but his roots trace back to Chapel Hill, where his father once coached.
Now, with a five-year deal in hand and a legacy to extend, Belichick is about to turn Kenan Stadium into something we’ve never seen before. But the road ahead is far from easy.

Now, the schedule is a tough one, and there is a lot of fixing that Belichick needs to do. The 2024 season was all about missed tackles, busted coverages, and too many “What just happened?!” moments. The season finale against NC State is a prime example, where the Tar Heels gave up 22 points in the fourth quarter. The game against Duke is another.
In the matchup against Duke, the Tar Heels were up 20-0 and still lost 21-20. It wasn’t just close games either. UNC was terrible against James Madison, where they gave up 70 points at home. Then came back-to-back Ls to Pitt, Georgia Tech, and Boston College. Their defense was nonexistent, and their offense was flashy but inconsistent.

Facing Clemson and NC State again, both of whom had UNC’s number in 2024, will be major tests. But if anyone loves a challenge, it’s Belichick
As September gets closer, one question remains unanswered. How far can Belichick take the Tar Heels in his first year?
