UCLA enters Week 12 facing its toughest test of the season, but the Bruins will be without their most important player. Nico Iamaleava, the centerpiece of the offense and the driving force behind UCLA’s competitive moments this year, has been ruled out for the crucial matchup against Ohio State.
His absence dramatically shifts the tone of the game and leaves the Bruins scrambling on short notice. Iamaleava suffered a concussion during last week’s loss to Nebraska. He finished that game, but the symptoms surfaced later, leading the medical staff to hold him out as a precaution.
Brett McMurphy of On3 first reported the news about Iamaleava’s absence in the upcoming matchup.

The timing of the injury could not be worse. UCLA already faces a daunting challenge against the top-ranked Buckeyes, and losing a dual-threat quarterback like Iamaleava changes the offensive outlook entirely.
Without him, the Bruins will rely on their backup, and the offense will likely look more conservative. Iamaleava’s ability to extend plays, push the ball downfield, and handle pressure has been the foundation of UCLA’s attack all season.
His absence removes that spark. The Bruins now need their defense to stay firm, their special teams to play clean, and their offense to avoid turnovers at all costs. Momentum swings become harder to manage without a proven starter under center.
The Bruins are coming off back-to-back losses, including a blowout 6-56 loss against the Indiana Hoosiers. This matchup was already a massive test. Now it becomes a tall climb against an elite defense and an Ohio State team with championship ambitions.
Going against an undefeated side without their star player is going to be difficult, but the Bruins can’t afford their third consecutive loss.

Nico Iamaleava’s Season So Far With the Bruins
Before the setback, Iamaleava had been at the center of everything UCLA built on offense this season. His numbers reflect a quarterback still developing but already capable of carrying a significant load.
He has completed around 65% of his passes while throwing for more than 1,600 yards, adding double-digit passing touchdowns and seven interceptions. On the ground, he has been even more impactful.
With nearly 400 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns, Iamaleava consistently gave the Bruins an extra dimension. Overall, his year has been promising, with strong growth signs and moments of high-end potential.
