Miami Dolphins star Tua Tagovailoa shocked the NFL world when he called out his teammates publicly after their Week 6 loss against the Los Angeles Chargers (29-27).
Tagovailoa said things start with leadership and that it should be clearly articulated what’s expected out of the players, expectations that are not being met currently. He further highlighted how they have guys late for player-only meetings, and some even not showing up at all.
The NFL world didn’t like the way the Dolphins QB conducted himself that day, for which he received a lot of backlash, leading to him publicly apologizing.
Talking about the controversy, his head coach from Alabama days, Nick Saban, shared with Pat McAfee how he feels about the whole thing.
“I am proud of the way that he handled it, but one of the things I always try to tell our players is you never criticize another player. In my entire coaching career, you never saw me criticize one of our players. I think everybody has to take responsibility for what they can control. If you start worrying about things you can’t control, that’s gonna start affecting things you can control,” Saban said.
“But if everybody takes responsibility for their own self-determination and do what they can do to make the team better. I was really shocked that he did what he did, when he threw some guys under the bus. Maybe theyre not playing the way they should play… but you don’t say that about your teammate. But I was really proud of the way he took accountability for making a mistake,” he added.
“I was really shocked that Tua did what he did. … But I really was proud of the way he came back and sort of took accountability for making a mistake.”
