LSU recently made the stunning decision to part ways with Brian Kelly midway through the 2025 season. With the Tigers sitting at 5-3 overall and a disappointing 2-3 in SEC play, Athletic Director Scott Woodward made the call to trigger after a blowout loss, 25-49, to Texas A&M.
ESPN SEC anchor and analyst Peter Burns, reacting to this, took to X, suggesting that LSU should immediately reach out to Nick Saban and offer whatever it takes to bring the recently retired Alabama legend into the fold.
“If I’m LSU, the 1st thing I do…. Call Nick Saban and offer him a king’s ransom to be in charge of the LSU search. Doesn’t matter the cost,” Burns wrote.

Kelly’s buyout sits at approximately $53.29 million, making it the second-highest in college football history.
The hype around LSU potentially vying to get Saban to coach the program makes a lot of sense, considering he spent five seasons at LSU from 2000 to 2004, delivering the program its first national championship in 2003.

Brian Kelly’s Tenure at LSU Ends with a 34-14 record
Kelly’s time at LSU finished after a record of 34-14 for just under four full seasons, which is very respectable, but not for a program like LSU. Woodward stated that anything less than making the playoffs is unacceptable for any program to meet those expectations.

Meanwhile, Saban has remained involved with college football since he retired after the 2024 season. He has still supported Alabama football while making comments here and there and even passing along information to new Crimson Tide head coach Kalen DeBoer.
Saban has been very clear that he has no intention of returning to coaching despite speculation each time a top-tier job becomes available.
The legacy of the former Alabama coach is unmatched, with six national championships during his time with Alabama, cementing his legacy as arguably one of the greatest college football coaches.
