Why Did DK Metcalf Punch a Lions Fan? Breaking Down the Incident That Sparked His Suspension

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf is in serious trouble with the NFL right now, as he has now been suspended for two games following an altercation with a Detroit Lions fan last Sunday. Metcalf was seen grabbing the fan by the shirt, and he also appeared to have landed a glancing blow to his head as he also appeared to push him away. This was captured on camera, but he was not ejected from the game.

Soon after the altercation happened, Metcalf immediately went back to playing, with the NFL defending the decision not to throw him out because the referees never seen the incident occur. They did launch an investigation, resulting in that two-game suspension. The question is, why did he throw hands with the Lions fan?

That fan was identified as Ryan Kennedy, and he spoke with the Detroit Free Press and talked about what really happened.

“He doesn’t like his government name. I called him that and then he grabbed me and ripped my shirt,” the Detroit Lions fan said. “I’m a little shocked. Like, everyone’s talking to me. I’m a little rattled, but I just want the Lions to win, baby.”

He also denied hurling a racial slur on Metcalf, or using, “misogynistic, or hate-based language during the incident,” during the incident, saying that “These allegations are completely false.” No matter what that fan actually said, it set Metcalf off, leading him to break several NFL rules.

DK Metcalf Planning To Appeal 2-Game Suspension After Altercation With Fan

As for DK Metcalf himself, he is set to lose $555,556 because of his two-game suspension and would also void $45 million in future guaranteed money, as stated in his contract, according to ESPN. Because of this, ESPN’s Adam Schefter has reported that Metcalf is already planning to appeal that suspension.

However, that might be an uphill battle, as many believe the star wide receiver broke the league’s policy about unnecessary physical contact with fans.

That rule specifies “players may not enter the stands or otherwise confront fans at any time on game day and … if a player makes unnecessary physical contact with a fan in any way that constitutes unsportsmanlike conduct or presents crowd-control issues and/or risk of injury, he will be held accountable.”
