The Los Angeles Chargers re-shaped its backfield this offseason, signing Najee Harris in the offseason and drafted Omarion Hampton with their first-round pick. Unfortunately for the Chargers and both of their top running backs, they both suffered injuries early on in the season that has both of them currently sidelined.
Harris suffered a season-ending Achilles tear in the team’s Week 3 win over the Denver Broncos. This paved the way for Hampton to take over as the leader of the backfield.
What Happened to Omarion Hampton?
Following Najee Harris’ season-ending injury, Omarion Hampton had more on his plate, being the sole No. 1 running back in Los Angeles’ backfield. However, two weeks later in the team’s game against the Washington Commanders, he suffered an injury to his left ankle in the third quarter of the game that knocked him out of for the rest of the game.

The Chargers placed Hampton on injured reserve, sidelining him a minimum of four games following the injury.
Will Omarion Hampton Play This Week?
No, Omarion Hampton will not play this week in the Chargers‘ Week 8 game against the Minnesota Vikings. Hampton is eligible to return in Week 10 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Early reports indicate that Hampton may need more time to recover from his injury, and suggest that he won’t return in Week 10. The Chargers will evaluate him on a week by week basis.
Omarion Hampton Fantasy Outlook
Prior to his injury, Omarion Hampton has had a productive start to his rookie campaign. He rushed for 314 yards on 66 carries, averaging 4.8 yards per carry while rushing for two touchdowns. As a receiver out of the backfield, he has 20 catches for 136 yards.
When he returns, Hampton will take over the backfield that has featured Kimani Vidal and Hassan Haskins recently.
The Chargers are reportedly in the market for a running back, so this could suggest a later return for Hampton. Depending on who they acquire if they make a trade, it could lower his fantasy value when he returns.
