Week 9 of the fantasy football season brings us to the critical matchups of the fantasy season. Managers must start pushing their team for playoff momentum while bye weeks and injuries attempt to get in their way. Ensuring the right players are in the lineup will be vital to round out the regular season with wins. Here is a full breakdown of which quarterbacks to start and sit in Week 9.
Start ‘Em
Daniel Jones (Indianapolis Colts)
A new week, yet the same high-flying Colts offense that has shocked the league. Daniel Jones is at the helm for Indianapolis, and for fantasy owners, he is an absolute start this week against the Steelers. He is averaging 20.8 points per game with an offense that has punted 16 times over the course of 8 games. The Steelers’ defense also got killed by the Packers on Sunday night, giving up 360 yards. Expect the Colts and Jones to keep it going this week.
Sam Darnold (Seattle Seahawks)
Darnold has been on a steadier streak over the past few games, averaging just over 250 yards per game. The Seahawks also seemed to have found their groove, winning 4 out of the last 5. On the other side, Washington has looked like one of the worst defenses in the NFL over the past few weeks. Look for Darnold to be a solid streaming start for this week.
Kyler Murray (Arizona Cardinals)
While the Cardinals’ roster isn’t the strength here, owners do have some advantages to start Murray. First, he is coming off a bye week and should be healthy going into this game. Second, Murray plays lights out in AT&T Stadium every time he plays there, going all the way back to his high school days in Dallas. The Cowboys, meanwhile, are struggling to stop just about anyone. It should be the perfect get-back spot for Murray and the Cardinals.
Sit ‘Em
Bo Nix (Denver Broncos)
Nix has played absolutely great over the past two games, but here comes Houston. The Texans have given up the fewest fantasy points to quarterbacks and have more interceptions than touchdowns allowed this season. Nix, while playing at a high level, just can’t get the nod to start this week.
Michael Penix Jr. (Atlanta Falcons)
After sitting out last week against the Dolphins, Penix Jr. returns to the field against a stingy Patriots defense. New England limits the run, allowing the second fewest in the league, which is something the Atlanta offense relies on heavily. They have also produced 7 interceptions and 19 sacks on the year, which doesn’t bode well for a Falcons offense that is struggling.
C.J. Stroud (Houston Texans)
Stroud is another quarterback to simply avoid this week as the Denver defense comes into town. The Broncos have led the NFL in pressure rate and absolutely dominated a Cowboys offense that was smoking heading into week 8. If Dak can’t get it done, it would be a tall task for Stroud, who has struggled to stay upright all year.
Final Thoughts
There are plenty of QB options around for Week 9 starts, and the biggest thing to watch for is the matchups. A defense that is playing at a high level could be the difference between a QB scoring 25 and 5, ultimately deciding matchups before they are even over. Stay smart and use the stats in what could be a roller coaster Week 9.
