Trevon Diggs’ defense has struggled throughout the season. While the Dallas Cowboys’ offense has been one of the best in the NFL, its defensive counterpart clearly lagged behind this year. Thus, such a struggle leads to changes.
Jerry Jones made his first major change, moving on from Diggs outright before the end of the season, with one game left to play, according to ESPN’s Todd Archer in a Tuesday report.
The Cowboys have released cornerback Trevon Diggs. He goes through the waiver process and if unclaimed, he will be a free agent.

Here’s a look at what could happen next for the cornerback.
Trevon Diggs Waiver Process
Upon release, the Dallas Cowboys cornerback is subject to the waiver process. Every NFL team can put in for the cornerback. However, based on current standings, the weakest team in the league is likely to get him first.
If no team claims the cornerback, he will become a free agent, where it will fall upon him to choose his next move, whether it is to wait for a call or make his own case for a franchise.
Trevon Diggs Contract Impact
According to Spotrac, Trevon Diggs will lose money as a result of the release. However, the Dallas Cowboys are set to financially come out ahead with Diggs in an out window. Diggs initially signed a five-year, $97 million deal with an annual salary of $19.4 million.
Upon his release after the second year of the deal, it appears that Diggs will receive no money from Dallas over the next three seasons, as per Over The Cap. Dallas will still have a dead cap hit, but it appears that no money will change hands in 2026, 2027, and 2028.
Trevon Diggs Potential Landing Spots
One potential landing spot for Trevon Diggs, still alive in the Super Bowl chase, could be the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers, hungry for an upgrade in a secondary that ranks near the bottom of the league, could pull for an emergency signing ahead of facing the Baltimore Ravens and hopefully other teams after Week 18.
The Cincinnati Bengals sat alongside Dallas with one of the least effective defenses in the NFL in 2025. If the unit wants to take a gamble with significant upside, the team has every reason to at least try out Diggs.
The Arizona Cardinals have been a punching bag down the stretch of the regular season, partly because of the team’s defense. A foundational upheaval appears to be on deck, and signing Diggs could be the first step in fixing a defense that has allowed at least 37 points in three of its last four games.
