The Swifties had a reason to celebrate Wednesday after the Houston Texans released safety CJ Gardner-Johnson.
Gardner-Johnson, who was dealt to the Texans by the Philadelphia Eagles, wore a sweatshirt mocking Taylor Swift and even insulted her relationship with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Kelce during Eagles victory parade in February.

CJ Gardner-Johnson’s Feud With Swift & Kelce
CJ Gardner-Johnson was part of the Eagles, who won the Super Bowl LIX against the Kansas City Chiefs in February. Kelce was part of the Chiefs roster and he is engaged to Taylor Swift recently.
The feud was started by the safety when he wore a sweatshirt during the championship parade that read:
“Swifties can LIX my balls”
Gardner-Johnson also posted an Instagram story, throwing shade at Kelce with an alleged reference to his ex-girlfriend Kayla Nicole. In the caption, the safety wrote:
“should’ve stayed with that thick s***.”
Swifties reacted unkindly, even posting negative reviews on Gardner-Johnson’s mother already closed restaurant. However, neither of Kelce or Swift have directly spoken about the safety.
After these incidents, the Eagles traded Gardner-Johnson to the Houston Texans, possibly to separate the controversy from the team. Now just three games into the 2025 season, the Texans has waived him following his struggles. The safety started all three games and recorded 15 tackles.
The safety’s exit was not entirely because of performance issues. Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said it was his decision to release the safety since Gardner-Johnson was not fitting into the team-first culture.
“It was my decision to move on,” Ryans said Wednesday. “I know what’s best for my team… Coming from me, the head coach, it was the best for our team. That’s why I made the decision.”
“It’s always my first rule or a team rule for our guys, always protect the team,” Ryans said. “It starts with me as a head coach to making sure everybody is on the same page with having a team-first mentality… It’ll never be about one person. It’ll never be about me personally. It’s collectively as a team, that’s how you go win. That’s how you do great things.”
It remains to be seen if CJ Gardner-Johnson can find another team for the remainder of the 2025 NFL season.
