What Happened With Stefon Diggs? Breaking Down the Legal Situation Involving Patriots WR

New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs has been charged with felony and misdemeanor charges due to an alleged incident on Dec. 2. The charges include assault and strangulation.

An initial hearing took place on Tuesday morning at Dedham, Massachusetts, District Court. His arraignment is set for Jan. 23, 2026, which is the Friday ahead of the AFC Championship game. Reportedly, the judge is considering impounding court documentation ahead of the arraignment.

The incident allegedly involved a female chef the NFL star had employed. The woman alleged she was owed a month’s salary, which led to a text message discussion with Diggs that turned physical. Allegedly, the player entered the woman’s bedroom and slapped her, and then held her in a chokehold.

Stefon Diggs has vehemently denied the allegations through his attorney, David Meier.

“Stefon Diggs categorically denies these allegations. They are unsubstantiated, uncorroborated, and were never investigated — because they did not occur. The timing and motivation for making the allegations is crystal clear: they are the direct result of an employee-employer financial dispute that was not resolved to the employee’s satisfaction. Stefon looks forward to establishing the truth in a court of law,” Meier said in a statement.

Stefon Diggs’ defense team argued that allowing the case to go fully public risked  “substantial risk of widespread publicity” that could taint the outcome of the process. Other reports point to the defense team working on a monetary resolution to the issue.

New England Patriots’ Statement on Stefon Diggs’ Situation

The New England Patriots released a statement about the player’s situation, which was neither here nor there.

The franchise seems to be playing its cards close to the chest, not outright criticising the player but not supporting him either.

“The New England Patriots are aware of the accusations that have been made regarding Stefon Diggs. Stefon has informed the organization that he categorically denies the allegations. We support Stefon,” the Patriots said in a statement. “We will continue to gather information and will cooperate fully with the appropriate authorities and the NFL as necessary. Out of respect for all parties involved, and given that this is an ongoing legal matter, we will have no further comment at this time.”

The NFL’s statement was equally vague, saying they were aware of the situation and that they had been in contact with the New England Patriots, but they refused to categorize the incident in any shape or form.
