Odell Beckham Jr. recently made headlines with his comment on how hard it is to live off a $100 million contract. During his appearance on The Pivot Podcast, OBJ claimed that when you go into the specifics and expenses, that money isn’t enough to last forever.
While OBJ provided his own analysis on the subject, and it seemed like he really believed in everything he said, NFL legend Shannon Sharpe vehemently disagreed. On a recent episode of Nightcap, Sharpe called him out.
Unc took a deep dive into what OBJ had said on The Pivot Podcast before picking his argument apart. Sharpe pointed out that OBJ was utilizing his earnings the wrong way. While expenses and investments are understandable, splurging money just to flaunt is something that didn’t sit right with him.
“Do you really need 10 houses?” Sharpe asked. “Do you really need 15 cars? Do you need to buy everybody in your family a mansion that costs $1 million, $2 million?” (From 1:10)
Sharpe explained that the problem isn’t just with buying expensive things for everyone around. If he bought expensive mansions and luxury cars for people around him, then he’d be the one to take care of the maintenance as well.
“OBJ, I’ going to be honest with you, bro. If you get 60 million dollars liquid and that can’t last you a lifetime, you’ve got a problem,” Sharpe said.
Unc firmly believes that the kind of money that OBJ made in his career is enough to not only survive but also maintain a good lifestyle. Some smart investments, holding back on unnecessary expenses, etc., could make this process a lot easier.
What did Odell Beckham Jr. say?
The scenario that OBJ talked about during his podcast appearance wasn’t all about him. He stated that if he didn’t have “a dollar” in his bank account, he’d be “straight” for the rest of his life.
The bigger point that he was trying to make was about how the $100 million isn’t as extravagant as some people made it out to be. In his opinion, a $100 million contract isn’t enough to last a lifetime for athletes.
“I always explain this to people, you give somebody a five-year $100 million contract, right, what is it really? It’s five years for 60 million,” he said. “You’re getting taxed, do the math, that’s 12 million a year, that you have to spend, use, save, invest, flaunt, whatever, however, just being real, I’m going to buy a car, I’m going to give my mom a house.”

OBJ said that everything costs money, and what people looking in from the outside don’t realize is that the millions of dollars fade away really quickly. So, even when an athlete is getting paid $8 million a year for five consecutive years, the $40 million total isn’t enough to live off of.
