Quarterback Russell Wilson may be considered one of the greatest quarterbacks of his generation, leading the Seattle Seahawks to their first and only Super Bowl title. However, in the twilight of his career, he has been benched by the New York Giants in favor of the younger Jaxson Dart.
He was the QB1 for the Giants at the start of the season, with the Giants struggling. When Dart was made the new starter, the team found new life, with the younger QB being expected to start vs. the New Orleans Saints.
Amid his benching, Wilson is keeping the faith and tweeted out a three-word message on X:
“Jesus Loves Us!” he wrote on X.

Entering Week 4, the Giants were off to a 0-3 start, and this was when head coach Brian Daboll decided to change things up, benching Wilson and making Dart start. This gamble paid off, as the Giants defeated the Chargers for their first win of the season, with Dart continuing as the starter while Wilson has been relegated to being the backup quarterback for the foreseeable future.
Daboll explained his decision to make the switch, saying that it was the “right thing” to do and refused to elaborate any further.
Former NFL Star Says Russell Wilson Should Retire Already
Wilson struggled in those three games that he started for the Giants, though he did shine against the Dallas Cowboys in that overtime thriller, which the Giants still lost. While the Super Bowl winner had hints of his former glory, he averaged just 4.5 yards per completion, and struggled against the Kansas City Chiefs, completing just 56.3% of his passes.
Because of his waning performances, former Chicago Bears OT and ESPN analyst Marcus Spears noted that Wilson should consider retirement, saying “Yeah, Russell gotta go!”
This led spears to rain praises on Jaxson Dart, saying that the new Giants QB1 is “going to be good” and said that he is providing the Giants with the spark that they need.
However, Spears is not calling it quits yet, telling the media that he still has plenty left in the tank and that he is not yet done.
“For me personally, I’m not done. I’ve got so much belief in myself and I know what I’m capable of. I know I can help this football team if that comes up,” he said.
For now, Wilson will be playing as Dart’s backup, which means he still has plenty of chances to prove that he does have plenty left to show.
