Patrick Mahomes And Travis Kelce Not Enough To Cover Kansas City’s Flaws As AFC Championship Dreams Fade: Analyst

Last week’s 22-19 loss against the Denver Broncos has put the Kansas City Chiefs in a tough spot. Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce’s team is 5-5 and is third in the AFC West. The way they are going, it appears they will lose the division for the first time in the last decade.

Reaching the AFC Championship used to feel like a given for Kansas City; now it feels under threat unless major fixes happen. On Thursday, NFL analyst Ryan Clark pondered the Chiefs’ latest loss, highlighting what the team is missing.

“When you look at what they did last week, it was 13–13 heading into the fourth quarter, you’ve got Andy Reid, Steve Spagnuolo, and Patrick Mahomes, right? I expect you to be better than Sean Payton, who is a great coach, Bo Nix, who’s a good quarterback, and Vance Joseph, who’s a very good defensive coordinator.

“I’ve seen those three people in Kansas City Chiefs colors do it so many times. But here’s the problem: when people watch the film of Kansas City, they know they’re not the same anymore.”

Clark makes note on several plays that make the Chiefs predictable and less dominant. He added:

“Not to watch them in the fourth quarter not execute, not pick up the blitz by Ja’Quan McMillon on third down, and see Patrick Mahomes get sacked. I’ve got to try to convince Daniel Jones that on 3rd-and-15, when they go to man and Bo Nix scrambles outside the pocket and completes the pass, they’re going to be better on defense. Or the Troy Franklin big-time play down the field on the post-corner on Jaylen Watson, and he throws the back-shoulder. Like, that’s what’s on the film.”

Finally, Clark shared his verdict on the Chiefs’ playoff chances and whether it’s too late to repeat as AFC champions.

“So I think for them, they have to hit their stride and momentum at the right time going into the playoffs,” Clark said. “And even if they don’t win the division, just make sure you get into the playoffs and they’ll be fine.”

Can Patrick Mahomes’ Chiefs Still Make the Playoffs?

While the Chiefs’ current situation is not that great they still stand a chance to qualify into the playoffs. Their playoff probability is estimated at around 55% to 57% if they can recover. However, their chance to win the division is very low.

If they win all their remaining games, the Chiefs will be guaranteed a playoff spot. However, if they lose games, they will have to depend on other results to qualify.

It remains to be seen if Mahomes stands tall against the odds and leads his team into the playoffs yet again.
