According to a report from ESPN, Mangold died just 12 days after he made a public appeal for a kidney transplant. In a statement he released on X, he revealed that he was diagnosed with a genetic defect in 2006 that led to chronic kidney disease. With no family able to donate to him, he made a public plea to the football community to donate a kidney. Sadly, his plea did not work out and he passed away less than two weeks later.
“In 2006, I was diagnosed with a genetic defect that has led to chronic kidney disease,” Mangold wrote. “I’m undergoing dialysis as we look for a kidney transplant. I always knew this day would come, but I thought I would have more time.”
