The New York Giants have not had a strong season. After losing to the Chicago Bears last week and falling to 2-8, the Giants opted to make a coaching change, firing head coach Brian Daboll. Daboll was in his fourth season as the head coach of the Giants. After a strong first season where he led the Giants to nine wins and a playoff appearance, Daboll struggled the following three seasons, only winning 11 games combined.
With Daboll out as the Giants’ head coach, assistant head coach and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka has been promoted to interim head coach. He will likely remain in that position for the rest of the year as the Giants conduct their coaching search. Many of the Giants’ top choices likely will not be available until after the season concludes.
However, there are a few coaches who are not currently employed by NFL teams who are interesting options. Notably, former Las Vegas Raiders head coach Jon Gruden is available to be hired during the season. On Friday, Gruden received an endorsement from Stephen A. Smith.
“We have to ask ourselves, in the land of second chances, in America, and the people that have been given second chances … Jon Gruden has been a football guy forever,” Stephen A. Smith said. “Words hurt, and he shouldn’t have emailed those words, and that’s fine. Does it warrant a death sentence? Especially in America, where we have seen people that have actually done significant harm to other human beings actually get a second chance at life.”
Who should be the next head coach of the New York Giants?

Would the New York Giants After the Jon Gruden Email Scandal?
One of the biggest question marks around Jon Gruden as a potential head coaching candidate is whether the New York Giants would even consider hiring him. In October 2021, a league investigation into the Washington Football Team uncovered emails sent by Gruden from 2011 to 2018 to then general manager Bruce Allen in which he used racist, misogynistic, and homophobic slurs.
Gruden resigned shortly after this information was released. It has now been four years since his last head coaching position, and Stephen A. Smith believes Jon Gruden deserves a second chance. It remains to be seen if the Giants believe the same.
Gruden won Super Bowl XXXVII as the HC of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
