Welcome to November in the NFL. Fans are about to find out whether teams can battle through injuries and rougher weather. For the New England Patriots, it is no different. Running back Rhamondre Stevenson has been ruled out for tonight against the New York Jets. Will it change things for the Patriots? Let’s break down how they will line up without one of their key players.
Stevenson has missed two games in a row. The RB1 is dealing with a toe injury. In his place, TreVeyon Henderson got the nod to be the starter. The rookie has had back-to-back games with double-digit carries and over 200 yards on the ground. Last week appears to have been his breakout game, as Henderson was able to grab 147 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Then there is the backup situation. Terrell Jennings is the RB2 on the roster while Stevenson is out. This week, things took a turn for the worse for the Patriots as Jennings was limited in practice. He should be able to give it a go on Thursday, but he will be banged up. More touches for Henderson, who could prove he is the RB1.
Running Back Outlook
The Pats’ running back depth is not too good right now. When Stevenson returns, it will be fixed. So the issue really doesn’t rely on depth, but rather who is going to start.
Sharing carries with Terrell Jennings in both games indicates the Patriots might ride out the duo until Stevenson can return. Henderson could change things with another big game. For now, the confidence level doesn’t seem high enough. Stevenson’s return is coming soon. It seems that the Patriots won’t have to worry about RB1 until Week 12.
Bottom Line
All in all, the Patriots seem to have found a reliable choice until Stevenson is ready again. It could change if Henderson has another big night. For the Jets, the Patriots are set. Henderson will start, and Jennings will be the backup.
