The 2025 regular season of the NFL officially concluded last week, with teams playing their final round of the league-stage games.
While some teams managed to book a playoff berth to compete in the next stage of the competition, some franchises have already started looking towards the next season.
The final regular season week saw a number of franchises give the boot to their head coaches following disappointing campaigns, with the Dallas Cowboys joining the list too.
The Dallas-based franchise has fired their defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus after hiring him just a year ago.

Eberflus had reportedly two years left on his contract with the Cowboys before being fired in his very first season. The Cowboys throughout the 2025 season conceded a league-high 30.1 points per game whilst allowing 6,409 total yards and a total of 511 points conceded over the course of the season.

While the exact details of his buyout are not available, the Dallas Cowboys, after abruptly terminating his contract, owe him a buyout settlement, as reported by Bill Zimmerman. He is also reportedly set to earn a buyout from two teams after being fired as the Chicago Bears’ head coach before the 2025 season.
Matt Eberflus’ Coaching History
Eberflus started his coaching career at the University of Toledo in 1992, where he spent nine seasons and held roles including defensive backs coach and defensive coordinator. He later moved on to Missouri from 2001 to 2008, serving first as defensive coordinator and eventually as an associate head coach.
His first professional opportunity came with the Cleveland Browns, where he worked as a linebackers coach from 2009 to 2010. Eberflus then joined the Dallas Cowboys in 2011, remaining on the staff through 2017 as linebackers coach.
He then went on to become the Indianapolis Colts’ defensive coordinator from 2018 through 2021 before being hired as head coach of the Chicago Bears. His tenure in Chicago ended in late November 2024 after he posted a 15–36 regular-season record over three seasons.
In January 2025, Eberflus returned to Dallas after agreeing to take over as the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator before subsequently being fired ahead of the 2026 season.
