The Los Angeles Chargers’ running back room has been hit hard following their Week 5 loss against the Washington Commanders. Already without veteran back Najee Harris for the season because of a torn Achilles, ending his campaign, rookie running back Omarion Hampton suffered an ankle injury in Week 5.
During a run in the third quarter, Hampton tripped over a defender, resulting in an ankle injury. He left the game and did not return, and was later seen wearing a walking boot on his left foot. The Chargers have subsequently placed him on injured reserve, and he is expected to miss at least four games.
Hampton was the Chargers’ leading rusher with 314 yards and two touchdowns. He also caught 20 receptions for 136 yards. In the wake of this development, the Chargers are now without their top two running backs, changing the depth chart on its head:
- Hassan Haskins (active)
- Kimani Vidal (active)
- Omarion Hampton (IR)
- Najee Harris (IR)
- Practice squad: Amar Johnson
Chargers HC Jim Harbaugh said RB Omarion Hampton will be placed injured reserve, sidelining him a minimum of four games due to his ankle injury.

With Omarion Hampton sidelined for four games, the Chargers will lean on Hassan Haskins, as he becomes the de facto RB1 for the team. This season, he has carried the ball five times for 13 yards.
Behind him is Kimani Vidal, who now stands to get more touches following injuries to Hampton and Harris. He has four carries for 18 yards.
The Chargers have Amar Johnson on the practice squad. While the rookie is yet to feature in a regular-season game, he did well in the preseason game against the Green Bay Packers.
What Chargers HC Said After Losing to Commanders?
Last week, the Chargers came up short in their game against the Commanders. Despite leading by 10-0 at one point, Jayden Daniels & Co. scored 27 unanswered points to win the game. In the post-game conference, Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh called back-to-back losses sloppy” but said the mistakes are “fixable.”
“I do [think it’s fixable],” Harbaugh said. “Concentration, focus in our assignment, alignment, our technique.
“All the things that you do as a good football team, and things we have done, that are in our DNA, in our character. When things are happening outside the teams character, more focus in those areas.”
The Chargers (3-2) will next line up to face the Miami Dolphins this weekend.
