“Could’ve Used [Keon Coleman]”: Shannon Sharpe Blasts Bills’ Offense After Texans Sack Josh Allen 8 Times in Embarrassing Defeat

The Buffalo Bills benched wide receiver Keon Coleman for the second straight game despite being healthy. It had to do with the wide receiver missing the mandatory meeting before last weekend’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Head coach Sean McDermott disciplined Coleman by sitting him out on Thursday despite being part of practice all week and being healthy. However, it seems the move might have backfired, as the Josh Allen-led Bills went on to lose against the Houston Texans 23-19.

On Thursday’s episode of Nightcap, Shannon Sharpe referenced the fact that the Bills allowed eight sacks and that Allen could have really used Keon Coleman to pass to in the loss. The legendary NFL tight end said (22:26):

“The Texans’ defense, that was—that might have been as impressive as we’ve seen. We’ve seen the Broncos get nine sacks, but against that guy, after what he’s just done and who he is, to sack him eight times, to pressure him as many times as they did, coming off the game that he came off of… Ocho, we’re not going to touch on it, but Keon Coleman—they could have used him. You’ve got your work cut out getting back on the field.”

Shannon Sharpe’s Nighcap co-host Chad Johnson commented about the Bills benching Keon Coleman because of disciplinary issues. Johnson said it only happens when the team believes that the player’s impact and value decrease within the team.

As such, he warns the second-year wide receiver that the team might not need him in the near future.

“Your time is ticking,” Johnson said. “Your time is ticking. When we were all young, we were late. Hell, I was late — but I still played, because I was an important piece of that dynamic we had in Cincinnati. When you’re an important piece, a valuable piece of an offense, and they know they need you, they won’t sit you. But if they can have you sit out a whole game and then go out there and be as productive as they were offensively, it’s a sign they don’t need you. So they’re giving you grace — and they’re giving you a warning.”

Johnson is in the middle of a good season, already catching 330 yards and three touchdowns while fumbling once. Head coach Sean McDermott believes that the suspension will do well for Johnson in terms of his professional growth.
