Is John Harbaugh the Dolphins’ Next Head Coach? Rumors Intensify in Miami After Mike McDaniel Firing

The Miami Dolphins unexpectadly fire head coach Mike McDaniel this week, and they automatically became a landing spot for former Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh.

Harbaugh was fired after 18 seasons by Baltimore, who couldn’t make the playoffs after losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers narrowly in the final regular-season game. He was one of the NFL’s longest tenured head coaches, and his availability has already sparked discussions with several NFL teams looking for a new head coach.

Is John Harbaugh the Dolphins’ Next Head Coach?

While reports claim that Dolphins owner Stephen Ross came away unimpressed following his meeting with Mike McDaniel, resulting in the head coach’s firing in the first place, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the prospect of hiring John Harbaugh as the next head coach might have played a part in the decision.

“With John Harbaugh available, and #Dolphins owner Stephen Ross’ ties to the family, he now looms as a key candidate for Miami. A reason to fire a coach, with the thought that they could get Harbaugh,” Rapoport wrote.

It’s also interesting to note that both Ross and Harbaugh have close ties thanks to Michigan. Ross even thought about hiring his brother, Jim Harbaugh, at one point before he went with Tony Sparano as head coach of Miami. Jim is known for leading Michigan to the national championship glory two seasons ago.

However, the potential hiring comes with its own set of challenges. According to Harbaugh’s agent, seven teams have already reached out to know if Harbaugh will be interested in coaching them, and that too within just 48 hours of his Ravens’ firing. As such, there will be a massive demand for John Harbaugh as head coach, and Miami might have to lay out a good contract and potentially outbid all of them if they want the former Super Bowl-winning head coach to lead their franchise.

In his 18 seasons with the Ravens, Harbaugh missed the playoffs only six times. The Ravens were the only team he has worked with as a head coach, and he has led the franchise to a 180-113 record, including going 13-11 in the postseason.
